Kurt,

I recently read the Kaw Lake Management Plan. It stated that blues rarely exceed 30 pounds in Kaw. Why is that? Is it genetics, over population, too much pressure on the big fish? How does Oologah compare with Kaw as far as trophy blue cats?

Thanks,
Cody

Cody, Kaw is a very productive lake (lots of nutrients to support a huge food web) and produces lots and lots of blue cats.  The reason we have few fish over 30 pounds is most likely linked to the population density...so many 10 pound fish, that not many can grow out of that size to reach 30 pounds.  This is the reason we changed the blue catfish regs to allow 15 per day, but only one over 30 inches.  We want anglers to harvest those smaller, eating-size blues.  If that portion of the population is decreased, the growth of the remaining fish should improve.

Thanks for being interested and for being an angler in Oklahoma!
