I went to keystone to catch shad on Saturday to take to sooner Sunday morning. I caught hundreds of 2-3 inch shad, but really had to work to catch 4-5 inch shad. My question is, do the larger shad mix in with the smaller shad or will they be at a different depth?  I have  also read that the moon affects how easy they are to catch, so how does the moon play into it? Thanks.

I caught shad at Keystone's Washington Irving cove Sat morning. All I could find were either real small (2") -or- huge (6").
Went back to the same cove two days later and nearly everything I could find was medium (3") to big (5").
I've thrown on tiny surface flips and brought up magnums.
And I've thrown on medium flips and brought up babies.
Sometimes they like deeper water drop off structures and sometimes they love the shallow, foot deep, water at the bank.
Some days I think it's just the luck of the draw.
I'd be interested in hearing other anglers chime in on this one.
The more you practice, the luckier you get.
