Well we ended up buying a new lower unit for the 'toon. The in-laws did not mark the shaft or put it in forward gear before pulling the old one. We stabbed the new one with a little bit of turning the flywheel to line it up. But now it won't go into reverse or neutral. Anybody know a trick to lining it up right without having to stab it a thousand times to get it lined up?
good fishing and God bless!

Unfortunately, I've had to stab a lower unit a half-dozen times already this year...

There should be part of the shifter cable showing on the outside of the driveshaft housing just above the lower unit. You can move the shift cable around with that to make sure that the cable is going on to the shift shaft as you re-stab the lower unit.

I would put the gear shift in neutral and make sure the lower unit is in neutral by carefully turning the shift shaft with a pair of pliers and turning the prop.
