Had a moment of crisis this morning. My 15 yr son asked his father who is suppose to know all why you see so many owls on the highway. "Are they just dumb?" was in next question.
I hypothesized, attempted to sound knowledgeable about the subject and then concluded, "That would be a good question for the message board."
Well?

I would guess they are just waiting for easy meals from the traffic

Highway right of way is usually mowed. This shorter grass makes it easier to spot a mouse or rat. Hawks hang out there more than Owls.

Owls are silent gliders, but their takeoff and turns are slow. WHAM!

Agree with Okiefishman. When I cut the hay meadows, owl and other meat eating birds line up on the power lines and in the trees to snag rodents running from the big mower.

I figured it was a combination of short right of way grass and lights being disorienting.

Ain't ya'll heard, the incidence of Owl Depression has risen dramatically, due to the presence of estrogen laced food.

Some areas where trucks haul grain to co-ops and terminals like the port it blows off of the trucks drawing rodents and predators.

Now Tony that make perfect sense. I did see an owl the other day that looked kind of sad. It kept mournfully saying, "Who cooks for you?" I think his cook must have left him.
