On your steering column, top side, there will be a port with a black plug - before you pull that plug make sure your steering wheel has been cranked as far as it will go on the side giving you problems (in other words the steering cylinder is fully retracted) - pull the plug - you can use Dexron II ATF fluid in place of the seastar branded - fill s SYRINGE with a flexible tube on end and start SLOWLY injecting fluid - when its full to the plug level, VERY slowly turn your steering wheel in the opposite direction to take in fluid - once you can add more do so - when you get to dead center, reinstall the plug and turn the cylinder back to full travel - repeat these steps until you have removed all the air in the lines - if you do this SLOWLY and carefully you won't have to bleed the line at the cylinder - you need to check your end caps on the steering cylinder to make sure you aren't leaking
I don't like Seastar golden fluid because there is no dye to tell you when its leaking - check all your fittings and hoses back to the steering pump for leaks - your helm is nothing more than a mechanical pump which drives the steering cylinder - make SURE that the o-ring on the bottom of the fill plug is good- or you will be getting air or leaking there too - you can mix the two oils(some say its a no-no) but never had problems on my boats.
If you turn the wheel too fast with the cap off you will be spewing oil in a geyser !!!
