Looks like I'm grounded for a while.  Not by the wife, but by boat issues.
Cash flow and such does not make just taking it to someone a real option.
Motor is worth 10X what the boat is worth.
I have a 1973 70 hp Evinrude that is having multiple issues.  I guess I should be thankful it has held out this long since I wrote it off several years ago.
Black oily water coming out of from around the prop suggests a blown seal probably due to a bit of water in the lower unit when Antarctica made its visit.
Need to go ahead and replace the impeller while I'm messing with things down there since this motor doesn't have a pee hole to tell you if it is working or not. (What were they thinking with that design?)
Starter may have some issues.  It isn't disengaging right.  I don't even want to try to explain the "hot wire" starting process, but it WAS working for me.
AND it doesn't seem to want to start now.  Turns over, but not wanting to even cough.  Haven't had time to ferret that one out yet since it died yesterday.  Hopefully fuel issues rather than spark issues.

I'm going to be in need of parts.  I figure online is the best route, and was wondering if anyone had any favorite sites or suggestions.

Try to get a hold of "Beans" he is up around Claremore. He may have someone for you to contact for used parts and he is pretty good for advice on these older engines as well. He is a Notebooker but he works full time and has a very busy schedule. You may want to ask for him to Email or call you on the regular "Message Board" forum as well.

Thanks.  Going to try to tear into things tomorrow to survey the "What's Wrongs."

I've been buying parts from Dave's Marine in Tulsa. Dustin (Beans) recommended him for a certain part that I was needing and he's been real fair with me. He has new parts and some used if you ask him...

He's just east of highway 169 on 11th... right next door to Gene Larew.

Fishin

I had the same problem with mine(1976 70hp evinrude) a couple weeks ago.  Definitely sounds like a blown seal.  I'll have to do some looking, but I might still have my old 1975 70hp evinrude at my parents house(long story short cracked the engine block so I saved it for parts) if you figure out what is wrong with yours and the motors are compatible I might be able to hook you up

This week is going to be pretty busy between work and going out of town, but if you aren't in a huge hurry, I'll check back in and I can prob give you a good deal on some parts next week.

If you end up having someone work on it though I'll throw another vote in for Daves.  He has always done quick great work at pretty good prices.

Thanks Eric I'll keep you in mind.  Not sure how quick I'm going to get things done.  No garage to work on it in, and this weather we are getting ready to have isn't too conducive.  I might have to go redneck and throw the little kicker on next to it and fish that way some.  I'm not too good for a move like that, and getting desperate enough to go.

I sold my 74' 70hp Johnson last summer. I did keep the service manual for it. If you need to use it let me know.
