I picked this motor up a few years ago in a trade. It’s in great shape but I’ve never used it because it needed an impeller.
First let me say I’m a decent mechanic but I know nothing about boat motors. So I finally bought a service manual and decided to do this “little project”.
I removed the four lower housing bolts and the lower unit just barley dropped. I can’t get it down enough to access the bolt that holds the shift linkage. I’m thinking the drive shaft is frozen in the powerhead but really don’t know. The manual says the lower unit should drop about an inch, and then you remove the linkage screw.
Also this has a “pin style” driveshaft and I don’t want to bend the pin or break something. Would it hurt to hit the lower unit with a rubber mallet to persuade it down? Does it matter if it’s in gear or neutral?
Any thoughts would be appreciated. It’s currently standing upside down and I sprayed the driveshaft with penetrating oil hoping it might help. This motor is really nice and I don’t want to break it. I’m starting to wish I’d just taken it in to the shop

Shift it into forward and as you drop the lower move the shift lever to reverse this should give you the room you need, then after that is out just turn the flywheel till it drops out.

Thanks jlb-cfd. I got the thing apart and installed the new impeller. Now I just need to get it bolted back up. Hopefully I can get to it tonight or tomorrow.
