When I was a kid I read my dad's outdoor mags from cover to cover. They had a real problem with the lampreys in the Great Lakes region, and ran several articles about the situation. When I caught the one in my bait net, I knew what it was, but had never seen or heard of one in this area before. It was the only one I'd seen up close and personal till about three years ago on the Buffalo. We caught three of four smallies with lampreys attached in tha area of the Narrows over there one day.
When I was a kid, about 15 I caught a common American Eel on a limbline in Claremore Lake. I've never heard of anyone else catching one of those around the area. Bout crapped my britches when I pulled the line up, thought I had a snake and let go, but something wasn't quite right about it, so I eased it up again. I took it home and skinned it, hell we ate about anything we caught or killed, and I was gonna try it.
I accidentally gave it to some kin out in western oklahoma along with some fish. I got a phone call about that. I don't think they ever believed that I didn't send it out to them on purpose, and I never did get a report as to its taste.
